News
South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES), previously known as Upstate Vet, Asheville, is proud to announce our new name and the completion of our hospital expansion. Our emergency and specialty hospital, located in Gerber Village, is opening to clients and patients on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
By expanding into the former Sky Zone building and increasing our footprint from 9,244 to 28,369 sq. ft., SAVES offers additional state-of-the-art veterinary medical services and amenities in a welcoming and comfortable setting. The clinical space was designed to give patients and the medical team the most sterile environment to help prevent the spread of illness. The SAVES expansion includes:
State-of-the-art exam rooms
Separate feline waiting area
State-of-the-art diagnostics, including on-site CT, MRI, and fluoroscopy
Five state-of-the-art integrated surgical suites
Separate canine and feline intensive care units
Infectious disease isolation unit with dedicated walk yard
Fully enclosed walk yards with separate areas for oncology patients
While SAVES has simply expanded into the space next door, the formal address of the hospital has changed to: 1836 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
“To celebrate our journey of growth and independence, and becoming an integral part of our community, Upstate Vet, Asheville changed our name to South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty”, said Holly Gibbons, Hospital Director at SAVES. “Just like before, our team will work with pet families and their primary care veterinarians to bring together medical knowledge, technology, and kindness for exceptional patient care.”

About South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES) Prior to becoming SAVES, Upstate Vet, Asheville was part of the Upstate Vet family. The location opened in 2009 to provide a closer option for initial consultations and follow-up care for families traveling from North Carolina and Tennessee to Greenville, SC. As the need for dedicated specialty and emergency care grew, Upstate Vet, Asheville steadily increased its availability, medical team, and services. Thanks to enormous community support, the hospital started its most recent expansion and rebrand in 2022. The team is forever grateful to Upstate Vet for their vision that brought the Asheville location to life and is proud to remain connected in the mission to serve animals in need of veterinary care across the region. The hospital is also pleased to remain an accredited referral center by the American Animal Hospital Association.
