Orthopedic Surgery for Pets
Veterinary Services

At South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty, our team is dedicated to providing advanced surgical care for pets in need. Recently, our board-certified surgeon Dr. Meredith Kapler joined Spotlight Carolina to discuss common orthopedic conditions in dogs, treatment options, and ways to keep pets healthy and active.
Understanding Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Kapler, a specialist in both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, explained the role of a veterinary surgeon and the additional training required beyond veterinary school. Her expertise allows her to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, with a particular focus on orthopedic injuries.
One of the most common orthopedic issues seen in dogs is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear, which affects the knee. Unlike ACL tears in humans, which are often caused by traumatic injuries during activities like skiing or football, CCL tears in dogs typically result from ligament degeneration over time.
Treatment Options for CCL Tears
For dogs experiencing a CCL tear, treatment can vary based on the severity of the injury. Some cases may improve with conservative management, including anti-inflammatory medications and rest. However, many dogs require surgical intervention to stabilize the knee and restore mobility.
Dr. Kapler emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and an active lifestyle to support joint health. Regular exercise, such as walks, hikes, and swimming, can strengthen muscles and reduce the risk of injury and arthritis.
